What is the best strain for a first time indoor crop when using soil. Looking for something that will be a little forgiving for someone going through the learning curve of being indoors for the first time ever. What would you use , or have you used that would be good for a first round in a new room?? Any ideas leave them here and lets make this a good resource for those starting their first indoor "medical" garden. Seeds or Cuttings???? anybody have a strong opinion either way??? :D

Personally, I'd start from clone with appx. 3-4 different strains.

If you only have access/room for 1 strain, I'd go with Master Kush.

Is easy to grow, fast flowering, relatively stable and can pack a good punch. Great starter/learning strain for sure.

What do you guys think?

Master Kush is definitely a good way to go. I started off with Durban Poison and resulted mediocre buds...shoulda stayed with something a little more safe....wasnt very happy.

I am building a decent space one 8'x8'x8' veg room and one 8'x8'x8' Flower room, and a 3'x8'x8' corridor in between to move from one room to the other without light leaks. I will:D be able to stay in the 100 square foot canopy rule we have here in Santa Cruz and still have a little space to move around the rooms. 50 square feet flower and 50 square feet veg. Maybe 60'flower/40'veg

A buddy of mine suggested Deep Chunk It's a pure Afghani that has not been touched since the early 80s. He knows how much I love old school Pure Indicas
Deep chunks flowers in about 55 days and is easy to grow for beginners of the indoor art. How many days in flower does Master Kush require?:D

Master Kush is a great strain to try out. If you are looking for essentially idiot-proof plants, then look no further. However, if you do invest some time into researching light and soil care, you could find that it will leave you wanting a more exotic strain like White Rhino or White Berry.

From my experiences, there are typically a few things that a good grow will do; create excellent bud quality due to the level of care taken by the grower for his personal medicine, as well as the ability to choose how to cure it once the harvest occurs. As such, any moderately good strain of marijuana will provide a careful, intelligent grower with copious amounts of very good bud.

Do some research on lights, soil, and growing/flowering periods for Master Kush, but don't be afraid to delve deeper into the world of personal medication once you're armed with knowledge!

Godspeed.

Thanks for the info DPHiL.Socrates ... I appreciate the input! I WILL try more then one strain when I get started. I just need to find some that have close to the same flowering cycle.

To be honest I would go with your friends suggestion Deep Chunk, if it as you say it is "untouched" since the 80's then that sounds like a winner for sure, go with something rare instead of something commercial. Though Master Kush is not a bad selection either. But for how easy it is to grow its unknown on the Deep Chunk so you should probably stick with the ones you can find all kinds of information about first. To me white rhino is easy to grow, its hard to over feed that monster, but i never got to see mine grow to full maturity so I wont go to far into that until I finish one completely. But it seems very forgiving, stayed very green and healthy when fed lightly but grew like crazy and stunk like hell when fed heavy.

Another strain you could look into is Big Bud, which is on almost every seed bank's list of strains. It's very hearty, and produces more bud per cubic foot of space than any other strain of marijuana that has been made available for commercial purchase. It is also a pretty heady strain too, so it's not like you'll be growing a pound or a pound and a half of just regular boring bud.

Also, keep in mind that when you are growing, you will have access to this bud as soon as it is done curing, which means you can control the quality of the bud based on how much effort is put into it. Homegrown bud has the potential to be better than almost any medical marijuana in any dispensary anywhere, as long as it has excellent genetics, is cared for properly, and is cured as best as possible.

Deep Chunk is available on Seedbay and a couple of other seed sites. It is being distributed by Tom Hill and is listed as easy and a good strain for Newbie indoor grower. It doesn't have the best leaf to calyx ratio, but I have a strong feeling this stuff is the pure Afghani we used to get in the northwest in the early 1980s. It was really piney and skunky, super sticky very tasty and worked really well.:D

Big bud is also one I am considering to go along with the Deep Chunk for the reasons you mentioned DPHiL.Socrates. it also has about the exact same flowering cycle, about 55 days.:D

The only reason I say that homegrown has the potential to be better than most of the medical, is because homegrown bud doesn't have to be moved and stored and restored and unpackaged and handled and packaged and then put onto display. During all the times you touch the bud, you knock off some of those mature trichromes. Not to mention you also may squish the bud together if it's in jars to tightly.

Obviously the premier dispensaries/collectives won't have as much of an issue since they probably have direct contact with the growers, and they take more care of their product, but there are certainly a good deal of shops that don't take nearly as much care as lets say Nuggetry would...

I've decided that weed makes everything more fun.

As such, I've also decided that it should be illegal to watch the Food network, as it would cause a massive hemmorhage in the brain due to the overwhelming sense of want, and all users of said weed could sue the Food network for public porn.

Weed is awesome, Chubbs.

Master kush is ok for a beginner grow, but that strain often tends to get powder mildew often, Personnaly I tthink Northern Lights plants are easy for beginners due to vigourous stable growth, and lack of pungent smell while growing. Kushes can be a lil finicky for some new growers

Deep Chunk will have to wait. I got some clones for now. I want to go through the learning curve of being indoors before I spend 90.00 on ten seeds...

But for now

O.K. here goes nothing!

I don't even know where to start. I guess the best course of action is a little info on what I have done to get ready.

#1 thing to do and the most critical part of this entire project is obtain a Doctors recommendation for Medical Marijuana. If your state does not have such a program get active in your community or move to a state that does. ( Preferably Not California) as we have way too many people already. Just kidding!

#2 research the growing guidelines in your area. For instance here in California the individual counties determine the growing guide lines. Here in Santa Cruz County any patient or caregiver can maintain a 100 square foot total combined canopy. It is most likely the most liberal county as far as that goes. Some counties go by the number of plants.

#3 Post the doctors recommendation at the entrance or just inside if the posting will draw unwanted attention to your garden.

Alright now that that is done I will say that building these rooms has been fun and at the same time consuming most of my waking thoughts. I have built two 8x9 rooms side by side and with their own entrances. I painted flat white on most of the walls and the ceiling. One wall is concrete blocks I painted it and the concrete floors with DryLock, a coating that is intended to block out any possible water or moisture. I do live in a redwood forest that gets 70 inches of rain a year average, and this is a basement. There is a hepa filter on the incoming air in the veg room down low close to the ground. I installed a 8 inch inline fan in the in the wall near the ceiling between the veg Room and the flower room it is sucking the air through the hepa filter on the other side of the room and blowing it into the flower room. Air coming into the flower room is then dropped down the wall with 8" ducting to the floor so it is down low again. Then it is pushed out of the flower room up high on the wall near the ceiling again with a 8 inch vortex fan and a charcoal filter. That warm air is vented into the rest of the basement. The rest of the basement is my workshop and it is nice have the warm air blowing in since the shop stays at about 50 degrees all year without it. I know I will be adding a dehumidifier soon as the rains come to the redwoods.

Someone with 6th grade math skills might say hey SantaCruzMts two 8x9 rooms add up to more then the 100 square foot canopy the Great County of Santa Cruz allows you. but I am able to set up 50 square feet in each room and still have room to move around and work on plants as well as keep supplies. I hate cramped spaces.

Now what do I have going on in there? I had a 600 Hps That was donated by a fellow patient. I bought two 90 watt quad band 6th gen 2009 technology LEDs I am running all three in veg now. I found some cool ways to mount lights with stuff I had laying around the shop. I will show pics!

I have Two Martian Mean Green babies, one Sour Bubble, One Bubba Kush,One Santa Cruz OG, and one Kanunga. All of these but one of the MMGs will be kept as mothers.

This is like day two of the room being running.I will be continuously updating this as I go along and will be looking for advice as well as support.I will be sharing all good or bad so here we go!!!!! You Guys and gals will be watching my success or failure! Oh yeah the flower room is sitting idle waiting for more lights, and plants that are ready to flower. I grow everything organic and in soil since outdoors is all I know. For this my first indoor grow I have chosen a 50/50 mix of Soil and Coco with some other goodies. All plants will be fed through soil amendments and teas.

Now Some Pics!! And thank you to all for the info I have already received. A lot of have helped already by your existing posts!
