View Full Version : Why does it seem like nobody uses seeds anymore?

Is it just me, or are we straying away from seeds in general. Is the art of growing from seed being lost to the quicker easier method? It is the opinion of some that you get stronger healthier plants when you use seed, and you don't inherit problems from someone else grow room, like bugs or disease. At the same time anybody can appreciate the importance of being able to make exact replicas of a great strain. While both methods have there advantages and disadvantages and both will always be around and needed, I am concerned that one day there will only be a handful of people who can crossbreed plants or even sex them for that matter, and they will be working at seed companies.
What do you think people??? Please tell me I am wrong by sharing your stories about seed grows, or about interesting Crosses you have done or are doing.:D

Well, I know for a fact that there are banks in Amsterdam that hold every phenotype of marijuana you can think of (for the most part), and they are banking on the exact same problem you just highlighted.
These banks will wait for seeds to disappear, and then corner the market somehow.

As far as growing goes, it is just easier for a novice to grab a handful of clones and go at it.
If they die, just go get more.
Now for teh pros, I think we all know seeds are a must.
I have not done any breeding for a while but my friends are currently doing some crazy mixes.
Especially down in SD. Some good hybrids coming out of NUGGETRY SD in teh near future. :)

I'm not sure if anyone should smoke it, because of the powerful effects it will have. I bet it would make people fall asleep or get really hungry, or both... maybe....

People ain't using seed cause they are trendy that think cloning is the only way. I been growing for seven years and I started from seeds and from clones, but in my own opion all my plants that stared from seeds grow faster and stronger.

Lazyness i say... well maybe in some cases. when you start from seed you can keep the pheno you want, and do all the fun of breeding, why let someone else have all the fun? Sure if i could get some of those clones from out west i would love to grow them but i would rather have them in seed form.

Well, I can tell ya this much...Amsterdam will not have ALL the seeds because I will have my fair share and then some. I love growing from seed for sure, to me, it's just more interesting and more fun. I love growing a cross I made for the first time, and watching it develop, without knowing what the outcome will be. As far as that goes, even a stable strain bought from a breeder, will have differences from seed to seed, and choosing the one that fits you best is critical in my opinion. Then you can clone that pheno and run it for several years if kept properly. Clones definitly have thier place. If you have a good strain that you want to grow, your better off growing clones cause they will all have an even canopy, and all the smoke is the same. I never start a grow with seeds because, well think about it, you want to do a grow, let's say 6 plants. If you get a pack of 12 seeds (reg.), you have to grow them for 6 wks. or so and let them pe-flower, and remove the males. If your lucky, you'll get 6 females. Now from my experience, no matter how good the breeder, out of 6 females you'll get 1-2 really special ones (keepers) 2-3 decent keepers, and at least a couple wierd lookin' bad yielders or just not up to par. So you end up with 3-4 good plants out of 12 seeds. Obviously, if you started with 12 clones, you would have the 6 best ones at the end. So for these puposes, clones are the way to go. Now, if you have the time and space, you can take that same 12 seeds and run them out, pick the best one , clone it, and grow your 6 plants in your regular grow , and you have the pheno YOU picked, instead of the one that whoever you got your clones from chose. As far as the health, vigor, yield, and potency, seeds are the best(once you picked the best pheno) and clones off the seed for the first couple runs are just as good as the seed mom. Once they start to get some age on them, that starts to drop off, so you don't want to be stuck growing the same clones forever. My first few years of serious growing I used clones only. But now I'm starting to run store bought seeds, and crossing my own, and honestly, that step forward is one that has really made my growing experience complete. It's up to us to not only create new strains ,but to keep the older, good ones alive forever.
